ayn ist der arabischste aller arabischen Laute, ein stimmhafter Kehllaut, der Anfangslaut in arabi = arabisch, und ebenfalls das Wort für Auge, das sehende Auge, aber auch für das neidende Auge, gegen welches zahlreiche Amulette und Abwehrsprüche existieren.

ayn ist the most arabic of all arabic phonemes, voiced and guttural, as in arabi = arabic. Ayn also is the word for eye, the seeing eye, and the envying eye, which is held responsible for all sorts of evil, and against which many charms and amulets are in use.
